MANAGING GENERATIONAL/CULTURAL DIFFERENCES IN THE WORKPLACE

Margaret J. Sumption

Margaret Sumption holds a Masters Degree in Counseling and Personnel Services from Northern State University. Along with her partner, Michael Wyland, she has owned and operated Sumption & Wyland for twenty years, a consulting firm specializing in leadership and teams training, board development, strategic planning, and executive coaching. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and serves as adjunct faculty for the University of Sioux Falls delivering coursework in grant and proposal writing, leadership and management. She also holds a national certification as a Senior Human Resource Professional (SPHR) from the National Society of Human Resource Management. Margaret works actively as a volunteer in the Sioux Falls community serving on the executive council of the Chamber of Commerce Leadership Sioux Falls program. She is past chair of the Regional Emergency Management Services Authority, is past chair of the Center for Women and is active in the Sioux Falls Chapter of Business and Professional Women.

David Cota

David Cota has thirty years of Executive Management with large national and multi-national companies. He has managed sales & marketing, manufacturing, product development, HR, supply-chain logistics and strategic planning in a variety of industries including trucking & transportation, apparel manufacturing, and online education. A Sioux Falls native involved in the Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Lions Club, CBMC, the Banquet and SculptureWalk.

Wanda Harris

Wanda Harris is the Human Resources Director for the Financial Service Company of First National of Nebraska, Inc. Wanda has 20 years of human resources management experience serving in senior roles within the financial services industry. She has also worked as an independent consultant developing leadership and management training curriculum for companies in South Dakota and Nebraska. Her areas of expertise are organizational design, employee relations, and compensation. Wanda has been certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources since 2002.

Wanda holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Augustana College and is currently pursing a Master of Arts in Organizational Communication through the University of South Dakota. She is a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls and has served on the Commission on Human Relations for the City of Sioux Falls. She has also volunteered for the Sioux Falls School District and Siouxland Libraries. Wanda and her husband, Jason have two children.

Barbara Ohme

Barbara Ohme is the vice president of administration for Raven Industries. Ohme has been with Raven Industries for 23 years, 10 as vice president of administration. She active with Casa, The Banquet and the YWCA.

OUR CHANGING CITY/STATE

Jeff Schmitt

Jeffrey Schmitt grew up in Sioux Falls. He is the chief planning and zoning official for the city. He previously worked as assistant director of planning and building services and as a transportation planner. He also worked as a neighborhood planner for the city of Aurora, Colorado.

Mike McCurry

Mike McCurry left junior college to help his father on a ranch. He worked outdoors until he broke his back in a forest fire and decided to return to college. He has a doctorate in sociology from South Dakota State University, a master’s in education from Northern Montana College, and bachelor’s in sociology from Montana State University. He is an extension sociologist at SDSU. His work history includes stints with the USDA Soil Conservation Service, Trinidad State Junior College in Colorado, USDA Forest Service, Flathead Valley Community College in Montana and Montana State.

MARKETING TO A CHANGING CUSTOMER

Aaron Mentele

Aaron Mentele is a developer and partner at Electric Pulp, a business founded in Sioux Falls in 1996 that now has 10 employees. Electric Pulp builds websites and mobile applications for a client base that has grown from local to national. He was formerly the online manager at Argus Leader Media.

Mark Smither

Mark is one of the driving forces behind Paulsen’s strategic planning and marketing capabilities. His extensive background in both writing and management gives him a unique edge in the creative advertising arena. Mark has worked in a creative capacity for more than 25 years, with 15 of those at Paulsen Marketing. He has been honored with numerous awards for his work, particularity in copywriting and broadcast production. Mark is a graduate of the University of South Dakota.

Matt Jensen

Matt Jensen, Executive Director, Vance Thompson Vision, has passionately pursued business and practice optimization for the last 10 years. His background is one of entrepreneurship and personal growth as a Pine & Gilmore Certified Experience Economy Expert.

Matt is an officially endorsed expert in the use of the rich portfolio of Pine & Gilmore ideation tools, as well as techniques for creating and enhancing compelling experiences for customers. Membership is granted through the completion of the Strategic Horizons LLP Experience Economy Certification Course to ensure sufficient acuity with the principles outlined in The Experience Economy.

With locations in Sioux Falls, SD and Minneapolis, MN, Matt Jensen Marketing (MJM) first and foremost operates virtually, redefining the traditional agency model for the digital world. Since January of 2008, the virtual structure of MJM has been afforded by leveraging freelance relationships with artists, writers, producers, videographers, directors of photography, editors, media contractors, and call centers. More than fifteen years of marketing communications account management experience, both in and outside traditional advertising agency environments, have made the coordination of this structure possible. Matt Jensen, enjoys the role of Practice Management Editor of Advanced Ocular Care and Premium Practice Today, is a regular columnist for Cataract & Refractive Surgery Today, and is a regular guest lecturer at the American Academy of Ophthalmology & the American Society for Cataract & Refractive Surgery. He is also one of only a handful of Experience Economy Experts in the world today.

Jaciel Keltgen

Jaciel Keltgen is an assistant professor in Augustana College's business administration department. Keltgen, a certified marketing executive, is working on a Ph.D. from the University of South Dakota. She teaches introductory marketing courses as well as business writing, healthcare marketing, advertising, promotions, sports marketing and personal selling. She has written and published case studies and articles on experiential and service learning as well as relationship marketing and healthcare marketing. Keltgen's advanced marketing students regularly research and write promotion plans for local non-profit and for-profit organizations as part of Augustana College's focus on community service. Current research, which follows her specialty in healthcare marketing and management, focuses on generational differences in the medical workplace. She serves on the college's Curriculum Council.

MONEY AND FINANCE

John Wenande

John has more than 38 years of public accounting experience providing various consulting services to clients, including business succession planning, business and individual tax planning, business valuation and litigation support for economic damage cases, business acquisitions and sales, transaction structuring and divorce planning. Among his career highlights, John has prepared business valuations for more than 200 companies for estate and gift purposes, litigation and buy-sell agreements. He has also testified in state and federal court more than 75 times for litigation support purposes.

John is a graduate of the University of South Dakota with a Bachelor of Science, Accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Financial Planner, a Personal Financial Specialist and is Accredited in Business Valuation. He is active in the community and has served on church and school committees. He was awarded the South Dakota CPA Society Public Service Award.

Carl Wynja

Carl Wynja is the market president in Sioux Falls for U.S. Bank. Wynja joined U.S Bank in 1992 after spending several years in public accounting. A native of Sioux Center, Iowa, he graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City. Wynja also serves as board president for Sioux Falls Christian School, treasurer for Sioux Empire United Way, on the boards of Sioux Falls Family YMCA and Hope Haven, and as a volunteer for Junior Achievement, First Reformed Church and at Hawthorne Elementary.

Vance Goldammer

Vance was born in Mitchell, South Dakota on November 20, 1949, and was admitted to the South Dakota Bar in 1975. He received his B.A. degree from Augustana College, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1972, and his J.D. from the University of South Dakota, where he graduated cum laude in 1975.

Vance entered private practice at the law firm of Boyce, Murphy, McDowell and Greenfield in 1975 before becoming a founding partner of Murphy, Goldammer & Prendergast in 2003.

Vance has served on numerous boards and committees throughout the years. He is the past Chair of the Board of Trustees at his alma mater, Augustana College and still serves on that board. He is an officer and board member for the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, and is on the Board of Directors with the Sheldon Reese Foundation where he serves as Treasurer. Vance is also a board member of other family foundations.

Vance is a minority owner of the Sioux Falls Pheasants(the area's minor league baseball team). He is also an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls where he has served on several boards and committees, and where he was also Chairman of the Church's Foundation. Vance is a member of the Sioux Falls Downtown Rotary.

Vance has been listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America and is listed in the top tier of business attorneys by America's Leading Business Lawyers. He has lectured at seminars for attorneys on a variety of subjects.

Vance is a member of the Sioux Falls Estate Planning Council, the Second Circuit Bar Association, the State Bar of South Dakota, the American Bar Association, and the United States Bankruptcy Court, District of South Dakota. His practice areas include business law, creditor's rights law, corporate law, real estate, commercial law, banking law, and estate planning.

Vance is married to Sherry Bormann, originally from Stickney, South Dakota. They have two children and one grandchild. Vance has completed nine marathons and has appeared on the television show "Jeopardy".

ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION

Mark Luecke

Mark Luecke, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of South Dakota Innovation Partners, LLC, has previously provided executive management and business consulting to large Fortune 500 companies and small entrepreneurial businesses throughout his career. Most recently, Mark served as President and Chief Operating Officer of a venture capital firm based in Denver, Colorado, where he started and managed a diversified portfolio of businesses. He also served as Managing Director of a merger and acquisition advisory services firm. Prior to this work, Mark served in a number of senior management positions with Avaya, Inc., Expanets, Inc., Northwestern Corporation, and Arthur Andersen, managing large teams in the areas of finance, business development, and technical operations.

Rich Naser

Richard Naser is the executive director of the South Dakota Technology Business Center in Sioux Falls. The Center opened in 2004 and is a business incubator providing space, services and development assistance to early stage and expanding technology-based businesses.

Naser also directs the Forward Sioux Falls Research, Technology and Entrepreneurship initiative which focuses on developing the human capital, early-stage funding and research infrastructure necessary to support high growth businesses, entrepreneurs and innovators.

He serves on several boards and committees, including the SDSU Engineering Advisory Council, USD's Sioux Falls Institutional Review Board, and the STI Computer Information Systems Advisory Board.

Mike Vetter

Mike Vetter has worked in a number of startups and currently serves as CEO of DataSync, a company that provides cloud CRM software and services. He raised $1.3 million in angel capital funding for DataSync in 2009, and was named South Dakota Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2010. Mike is passionate about building businesses on ideas that solve human problems. He has a background in software and has experience in funding, software delivery, market development and operations management. Mike grew up in Madison, SD and holds a B.S. in eCommerce from Dakota State University.

REAL ESTATE TRENDS

Michael Bender

Michael Bender was raised in Dallas, Texas. He graduated from Texas Christian University in 1981 with a degree in business. He became a commercial real estate broker in 1980. He moved to Sioux Falls in 1992. He was the first broker in South Dakota to attain the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR) designation. He also has achieved the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) designation. He owns Bender Commercial Real Estate Services and Midwest Property Services.

Dennis Breske

Dennis Breske started NAI Sioux Falls after acquiring several years of experience in commercial real estate in the Sioux Falls market. He has completed hundreds of commercial real estate transactions and is one of the most professional and knowledgeable agents in the market. In addition to owning NAI Sioux Falls, he co-owns Murphy Business of Sioux Falls, which helps buy and sell businesses and does valuations. Prior to entering commercial real estate, he worked for the state at the Governor's Office of Economic Development.

Mike Hauck

Mike Hauck is a commercial real estate broker and the founder of The Accord Commercial Team at HJN Team Real Estate. Mike has also been a licensed South Dakota attorney since 1989. He graduated from O'Gorman High School and the University of South Dakota before attending Hamline Law School in St. Paul, Minnesota where he achieved recognition for the top academic performance in his class. Upon graduation from law school, Mike and his wife moved to Sioux Falls where Mike entered into private legal practice. After 17 years of private law practice in Sioux Falls, Mike became a commercial real estate broker in early 2007. In February of 2010, he started The Accord Commercial Team at HJN Team Real Estate where he also maintains a limited legal practice dealing primarily with real estate and business matters. Mike works with all types of commercial properties but has dealt most extensively with office, retail and investment properties as well as business brokerage.

Craig Lloyd

Craig Lloyd has been a leader in property management, real estate, construction, and development since 1972. He is dedicated to ensuring growth and vitality throughout Sioux Falls and the surrounding area, as he remains an active community leader, partnering with local nonprofit organizations and donating land and labor, financial assistance, and other resources.
